DOX Center for Contemporary Art

Prague hotels

The Dox Center for Contemporary Art is an interesting museum in Prague whose mission is to display fine works of contemporary art that shape the world. The museum is closed Tuesday and open Wednesday through Friday 11AM to 7PM and Saturday through Monday 10AM to 6PM. The modern museum was started in 2002 and displays some of the best Contemporary Art from the region. This is a very different kind of museum hosting a wide array of different attractions.

Currently at the center there is a Digital Sculptures exhibit featuring many works from the Faculty of Creative Arts at the Brno University of Technology, the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, and the Faculty of Art and Design at the Jan Evangelista Purkyne University in Ústí nad Labem. On display is the collection of interesting different sculptures exploring different spatial elements.

Also featured here is the Prison: No Limits for Art, which is a very interesting exhibit that came about by grouping 30 prison inmates together with artists who created unique and original pieces of art for this gallery. This gallery came to be in February of 2011 and runs through the end of the year.

Another interesting exhibit that is currently ongoing at the center is The Lucifer Effect: Encountering Evil. This exhibit aims to show how surprisingly easily people turn to evil and is quite an interesting exploration into psychology. Works from artists such as Hans Haacke, Jenny Holzer, Harun Farocki and Antoni Muntadas are all featured within this exhibition. This exhibit is an interesting look at the human mind and the art that has come to be from a peek into the dark side of human psychology. The exhibit started in October of 2011 and runs through February of 2012. The Shoe Christ designed by Petr Motycka is an interesting monument located here made up of 1444 shoes that have been put together in the shape of Christ on the Cross. The artist created the exhibit with the thought in mind that shoes represent social standing and this design says much about his exploration into society and religion.

The Aliens and Herons is another exhibit that is currently being displayed at the Dox Center. This exhibit is composed of over 300 different object that came into existence after 1989 and the fall of communism in the region, each symbolic of the struggles and realities of the time as well as the revolution that took place. Many of these statues and sculptures can be found outside the museum and this exhibition is an interesting look into this important topic in the country's history.

All of these exhibits show a different kind of art here in Prague and while there are many interesting galleries in the city, this may be the best place to come to see something completely different. The contemporary art featured here is much more edgy and distinctive than you will see in most galleries throughout Europe and for this reason this is quite a refreshing place to visit after a long exploration of art within the city.
