Prague City Gallery is an important gallery in Prague that displays important works of art from the 19 th and 20 th century. Founded in 1963, the gallery has built up an impressive collection of art and also maintains many monuments, carvings and plaques throughout the city of Prague. With over 14,500 works of art, the collection is quite large and there are some fascinating pieces that tell the story of Czech Art during this time period. There are seven separate sites under the city gallery and passes can be obtained that will let visitors enjoy every attraction in one single affordable pass. Here you can find an entire exhibition dedicated to Frantisek Bílek an important contemporary artist from the region. This is a very active gallery with many rotating exhibitions at the museums various sites. In fact today the exhibitions total over 650, which show the breadth of this massive collection of fine contemporary art from the region. It is said that the gallery is the second most relevant collection in all of Prague after the National Museum.
Exhibitions can be seen at the Stone Bell House, the Golden Ring House, Bilek's Villa, Troja Chateau and the Municipal Library. One permanent exhibition is the Eternal Summer in a Roman Villa exhibit located at Troja Chateau. This is an intriguing exhibit and the beautiful chateau is with the price of entry on its own. The Stone Ball House is an important building located within Old Town Square which is one of the oldest monuments in the city dating back to the 13 th century. Gothic and Baroque elements can be seen from the restoration and reconstruction efforts over the years and this is an interesting place to come view some of the best contemporary art in the city.
The Golden Ring House is another important building of which some elements remain from its construction in the 15 th century. Works from 20 th Century artists from the region such as Toyen, Josef Sma, Jan Zrzavý and Jirí Kolár can all be seen here. This is one of the best places to come and view contemporary art when nearby Old Town Square.
Another important location is the Municipal Library which was built between 1925 and 1928. This is still the home of the city library and the second floor gallery, acquired in 1992 is the location of a gallery displaying works held by the gallery. There is also an Art Deco loft here that serves as the Mayor of Prague's personal flat. Lecture halls and exhibition space is also here and this is an important gathering place for attraction that pass through.
