Prague City Museum

Prague hotels

Prague is a city with an extremely rich history dating back thousands of years and the Prague City Museum is the place to come and see this history up close and personal. Housing artifacts from ancient times, the museum tells the story of this great city from the first civilizations that lived here up through the 18 th century. This museum is open from Tuesday through Sunday from 9AM through 6PM and entry is very reasonably priced with discounts available for children and students.

The museum features a wide array of artifacts that are related to the history of Prague and the surrounding region. This is quite a diverse collection with artifacts ranging from archeological findings to 18 th century artifacts. The museum is well located, right within the city center and easy to find, nearby other main attractions in the city. Coming here is quite a treat as you are swept into another time, seeing how civilization has progressed within this region from ancient times through just a few hundred years ago. This is a great attraction to come and learn more about the history of this beautiful city and luckily tours are available in multiple languages, but do check ahead with the museum for the times that these tours are available. Various sculptures and works of art are also featured here including works from artists like Skreta, Brandl, Grund and Hirschely.

This is probably the best location within the city of Prague to get a real feel for how people here once lived and what their lifestyle may have consisted of. The collection here is set purposely to tell a story of the evolution of civilization here in Prague and the guided tours are particularly helpful in explaining this progression. Of particular note is the cardboard model of the city of Prague, built by Antonin Langweil. This model is quite an accurate portrayal of the city of Prague as it existed 150 years ago. While many buildings have since been destroyed, the amazingly detailed model has said to have been used to rebuild the façades of many buildings within the city to their former appearances. This model itself is more than worth the price of admission and shows Prague is perhaps its best form.

This is quite an interesting museum and when planning on coming here you should set aside a fair amount of time in order to thoroughly explore this attraction. Many travelers will find that a trip here is an excellent way to preface your exploration through Prague as you can first get a feel for the way this city has come to be what it is today before heading out on the town. With its proximity to other great attractions and early opening time, it is advisable to head here first before a day of sightseeing within the city. No visit to this city is complete without a thorough understanding of how this place came to be and no other place can better explain it than the Prague City Museum.
