St. Nicholas Cathedral

Prague hotels

St. Nicholas Cathedral in Prague is the best church of its kind within Prague with its Baroque styling that makes it a very unique and beautiful church. This church dates back to 1283 and the current church was completed by Kilisn Ignac Dientzenhofer designed from plans set out by his father Krystof Dientzenhofer. This is the same architect that built St. Nicholas Church in Prague, another important church in the area. It should also be noted that architect Anselmo Lurago spend five years working on the church as well. The church sits in Prague's Lesser Quarter and its large green dome and bell tower stretch to 80 meters high. The historic church has recently been used as a venue for concerts which come and play here from March through November. The Cathedral itself is open November through February from 9AM to 4PM and from March through October 9AM to 5PM. The Tower is open April through October from 10AM to 6PM daily and only Saturday and Sunday during November through March from 10AM to 5 PM.

Entrance fees to the cathedral are very reasonable with discounted rates available for students and free entry for children under 10 years of age. Concert tickets are also available and though they are more expensive, this is a truly remarkable venue to view a concert. This is a very interesting place to come see firsthand and for the cheap price of admission to the cathedral this is a must see attraction.

This is an important historical and religious site for Catholicism within Prague. The large dome is quite an impressive site both from the inside of the church looking up as well as from the exterior of the church. One famous calling card of this church is the fact that the infamous Wolfgang Van Mozart played the same organ that is still here at the church during his stay in Prague. The interior of the cathedral is ornately decorated and work from artists Frantisek Xaver Palk, Ignac Frantisek Platzer and Karel Skreta are all prominently featured here. This cathedral is often times mistaken for St. Nicholas Church which is located in Old Town Prague so when browsing online for information on the Cathedral, make sure you are looking at information on the Cathedral in Lesser Town and not the church of the same name in Old Town.

For those interested in great architecture, the history of Catholicism in Prague and the wonderful art featured within this cathedral, this is a must see attraction and one of the top attractions in all of Lesser Town. Located nearby is the popular Vrtba Garden which is another top attraction in Lesser Town and offers some of the best views of the Cathedral. Many visitors will choose to come explore the cathedral before relaxing and taking in the views from Vrtba Garden. However you choose to view the cathedral, you will be glad you did as this is one of the better off the beaten path attractions in Prague and certainly one of the best in Lesser Town.
