Old Town Hall in Prague is one of the more significant historical sites in the entire city. Dating back to 1338, the building was largely destroyed during World War II and now looks as if it is two separate buildings. In the winter season from November through March, visitors can come explore the site from 11AM to 5PM Mondays, 9AM to 5PM Tuesday through Sunday. In the busier summer months hours are extended from 11AM to 6PM Mondays and 9AM to 6PM Tuesday through Sunday. The site also features the Town Hall Tower one of the tallest sites in the entire city where the Astronomical Clock is located. Constructed in 1410 by mathematicians from nearby Prague Charles University, the Astronomical Clock is a hugely important site and one of the top attractions within the city. Twelve apostles were added to the clock in the 19 th century to bless the city. The four figures at the clock dial are symbols of the Prague Medieval society. There is a calendar painted by Josef Manes in 1805 that has been replicated underneath the clock. The original piece is held for safekeeping within the Prague Museum of History.
The clock tower is quite an impressive sight and upon paying for admission and entering the building, visitors can take the elevator to the top floor to enjoy some of the best views available within the city of Prague. Also at the top of the tower visitors can dress up in medieval attire and take pictures while raised seventy meters above the beautiful storybook city of Prague. This attraction is located right in the center of the city in Old Town square which is a massive gathering place where tourists can be seen in large numbers. Many other top attractions are located nearby and this is the ideal place to begin your exploration of the city as you can peer out at other nearby attractions and determine what you might want to visit next.
The Old Town Hall is a place that has such a rich history in the development of the government and the site of the city council for centuries. While the site was largely decimated by Nazi Artillery fire, the restoration efforts have done a great job of reconstructing a very interesting attraction and making a site that is adored by travelers.
Tourism is the main industry today in Prague and the efforts to create a medieval city that is tourist friendly have been very successful. Around this area you can take rides in a horse drawn carriage, grab a beer and bratwurst in the square or enjoy one of the many fine dining establishments nearby. Set aside a few hours to see this attraction and thoroughly explore Old Town Square and you will be hard pressed to find a dull moment. Keep in mind that the tower can get quite crowded due to its small amount of space and huge demand during the summer months so plan accordingly when coming to see this attraction.
